JamRadar ("we," "our," or "us") operates a web-based platform designed to connect musicians for jam sessions and band formation. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information when you visit our website.
Age Requirement: JamRadar is intended for users 18 years and older. We do not knowingly collect information from individuals under 18. If we become aware that a user is under 18, we will promptly delete their account and all associated data.
1. Information We Collect
A. Google Account Information (OAuth)
When you sign in using Google, we authenticate your identity using Firebase Authentication. We strictly limit the data we use:
Email Address: Required to identify your account, secure your login, and send service notifications (e.g., missed messages).
Google ID: A unique identifier provided by Google to manage your session.
Data Minimization: While Google's standard login token may contain your full name and profile picture, we do not import, display, or store this information. You are identified on our platform solely by the Nickname you enter manually.
B. Profile Information
To use the app, we require only the following information to match you with other musicians:
Nickname: A display name of your choice (does not need to be your real name).
Musical Instruments: The instruments you play (e.g., Guitar, Drums).
Preferences: Your selected Genres, Skill Level, Age Group, and Musical Intent.
C. Location Data (GPS & Privacy)
JamRadar is a location-based service. We process your location data with a strict distinction between what is stored privately and what is shared publicly:
Collection: If you use the "Automatic Location" feature, we request access to your device's precise GPS coordinates via the web browser.
Private Storage (Exact Location): We store your precise GPS coordinates securely in our database for internal matching logic and analytics. This specific data point is never exposed to other users or third parties.
Public Display (Approximate Location): For all public interactions—including the map display, search results, and distance calculations shown to other users—we generate and use a separate "Approximate Location." This location is randomly offset (approx. 0.5-mile radius) to ensure your specific street address remains hidden.
2. How We Use Your Information
We use your data solely to operate the JamRadar service:
Connecting Musicians: Your approximate location and musical profile are displayed on the map so other users can find you based on filters.
Analytics (Firebase Analytics): We use Firebase Analytics to track app usage patterns including daily active users, monthly active users, and milestone events (e.g., first profile view, first message sent). This data is aggregated and anonymized to understand geographic demand and improve our service.
Authentication: To secure your account and prevent unauthorized access.
3. Data Sharing and Third Parties
We do not sell your personal data to advertisers. We share data only with the trusted technical infrastructure providers required to run the app:
Google Firebase: Used for authentication, database storage, hosting, and cloud functions.
Mapbox: Used to render the visual map tiles. Mapbox may process your IP address to serve map images, but they do not receive your user profile data.
OpenStreetMap Nominatim: Used to convert GPS coordinates into human-readable location names (e.g., "Baltimore, Maryland, USA"). The Nominatim API receives coordinates for conversion but does not store your personal data.
SendGrid: Used to send email notifications (e.g., daily digest of unread messages). SendGrid processes your email address and message content for delivery purposes only.
4. Your Data Rights
You have full control over your data:
Edit Profile: You can update your instruments, nickname, and location at any time in the Settings menu.
Email Preferences: You can opt out of daily digest email notifications at any time in the Settings menu. Note that critical service emails (e.g., account security notifications) cannot be disabled.
Account Deletion: You may permanently delete your account directly within the app's Settings menu. Effect of Deletion: This action immediately removes your profile, authentication records, exact location data, and personal message history from our database. This action is irreversible.
5. Security
We implement security measures designed to protect your information, including HTTPS encryption for all data in transit and Google Firestore security rules to ensure only you can edit your own profile.
